Hacienda Labor de Rivera

Rivera's Labor: A Historic Hacienda of Faith, Lineage, and Tradition in Jalisco

The ancestral history of a hacienda marked by religious devotion, family heritage, and transformation over the centuries.

Origins and evolution of the name

During the first years of colonization in the Kingdom of New Galicia, the haciendas and estancias were usually identified by the name of their owners. This is how the Labor de Rivera was born, originally known as the labor of María de Colio since 1567, when it was acquired by her husband Juan Guerra. Later, her son, Father Diego de Aguiar, gave it the name Labor de San Nicolás, in honor of San Nicolás de Tolentino, making him the patron saint of the property.

Over the years, the popular name evolved according to the surnames of its successive owners. It became known as La Labor de Nicolás de Rivera after the marriage of María, heiress of the estate, to Nicolás de Rivera. Eventually, the name became established as Labor de Rivera, although it was also called La Labor de Siordia or
La Labor de los Nicolases, due to the many owners who shared that name.

A priest's estate

La Labor de Rivera was inherited not only by prominent families, but also by figures from the clergy. Father Diego de Aguiar, one of the first owners, dedicated much of his life to expanding the property and fostering faith among the inhabitants, officiating in Nahuatl and other indigenous languages. He is credited with building the first chapel on the estate.

Over time, other priests took possession of the property, including:

  • The priest Juan Bautista de Olachea y Loperena, rector of the Colegio Seminario de San José.
  • The doctor Salvador Jiménez Espinoza, archdeacon of Guadalajara (although he acted as an intermediary).
  • The priest Nicolás Marcelino de Siordia, heir to a family of prominent landowners.
  • The priest Francisco Díaz Inguanzo, the last priest owner, who sold the estate in 1832.

Faith, tradition and religious festivals

Spirituality was always a central pillar in Rivera's work. Since the time of Father Diego de Aguiar, the cult of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, defender of the souls in purgatory, was established. In her honor, annual celebrations were established every September 10, a tradition reaffirmed in the wills of her descendants.

Also celebrated were:

  • Mass in honor of the Virgin of the Purification, every February 2.
  • Mass for All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2), established by Pedro de la Rea in his will of 1663.

These festivities united indigenous people, workers, and neighbors, turning the hacienda into a spiritual and community center.

Living legacy of Jalisco history

Today, Labor de Rivera not only represents a physical place, but a living legacy of Mexican colonial history. Its walls and lands enclose centuries of faith, social transformation, and family traditions, offering valuable testimony to the cultural and religious fusion that shaped the haciendas of Jalisco.
